The platform question, and why it comes second

To deal with the expensive thing first: most people arrive at this decision having already chosen a platform, usually on a recommendation. That is the decision this page is about, because it is the one that costs money later rather than now.

The more interesting thing about this market is what people search for. A significant share of the demand here is named after software rather than outcomes: businesses looking for a Shopify developer or a WordPress developer before they have written down what the site actually has to do. If Shopify is already the decision, store setup rather than the platform choice is what is actually left to get right.

That order is backwards, and it is expensive. A platform is an implementation detail chosen from the requirements. Picking it first means the requirements get bent to fit the tool, and the bill for that usually arrives a year or two later when something the business now needs is awkward or impossible.

Which platform we would reach for depends on what you are doing. Selling physical products with real inventory and shipping rules, hosted commerce is usually right. Publishing regularly with non-technical editors, a content system earns its place. Anything with accounts, workflow or logic that is genuinely yours, neither, and it should be built. None of that can be decided before the requirements exist.

The full scope, process and ownership terms are on our web design service page. If your site already exists and the problem is that nobody finds it, that is a different engagement and SEO in Austin is the page for it. The same build process runs wherever the business is.

Requirements first, or platform first

The same project, decided in two orders, and they do not cost the same.

Requirements first

You write down what the site has to do, then choose the tool that does it.

The scope names the pages, the functions and what is deliberately excluded. The platform decision takes about an hour once that document exists, because by then it is a technical question with an obvious answer.

Platform first

You choose the software, then discover what it will not do.

Requirements get quietly trimmed to what the tool supports, and the ones that cannot be trimmed become plugins, workarounds and eventually a rebuild. The cost does not show up in the original quote, which is why the order matters.

Headless WordPress, a multilingual store, a booking system. The platform followed what the site had to do rather than the other way round.

What an Austin project looks like with us

Requirements before software

We write what the site has to do, which pages exist and what is out of scope, and you sign it before design begins. The platform is chosen from that document.

Built to be found

Structure, speed and search readiness are part of the build rather than a phase afterwards. A site that looks right and cannot be found has failed at the job that pays for it.

Milestones you approve

Work is released in stages you see and sign off, and payment follows those stages. You never pay for work you have not seen.

Yours at the end

Code, content, domain, hosting and analytics are in your name from day one and stay with you, whatever happens to the relationship.

How a build runs

  1. Scope and statement of work

    Before anything is signed

Pages, functionality, exclusions and price, written down and agreed. This is the document that settles disagreements later, cheaply.

  2. Design, reviewed in stages

    Weeks one to three

You see and approve the direction before it is built, not after. Changes are far less expensive at this point and we would rather have them here.

  3. Build and content

Weeks three to eight, depending on scope

Separately staffed design, development and content, so one stage is not waiting on the person finishing another.

  4. Handover

    At the end

Accounts, code and access transferred to you, with what you need to run it. If you want us afterwards that is a separate decision, not an assumption.

Questions Austin businesses ask

Should I ask for Shopify or WordPress?

Neither, at first. Write down what the site has to do and the platform becomes an easy technical decision an hour later. Choosing the software first is how requirements get bent to fit a tool and how rebuilds get scheduled.

What does a website cost?

Six thousand dollars is the floor for any web design project. The final cost depends on page count, functionality and content scope, and the number is written into the statement of work before anything begins.

Who owns the site when it is finished?

You do, and you do from the start. Code, content, domain, hosting and analytics are in your name and stay with you if you leave. It is written into the contract.
